This course will introduce you to the uses and functions of the statistical software SPSS. It covers data entry and editing, and the basics of analyses and graphs.
It’s suitable for those with little or no experience of SPSS, or those who want a refresher. A basic knowledge of statistics will be helpful.

Prerequisites

This course is designed with beginners in mind and assumes no prior knowledge of statistics or quantitative research background. Participants are expected to have their own laptops. The software will be provided by the institution.

Objectives

The course will:

  • Introduce participants to SPSS as a data analysis tool.

  • Introduce survey data as a key quantitative resource for social science research.

  • Introduce basic statistics for exploratory data analysis, including methods for describing and summarizing variable distributions.

  • Provide essential skills for data manipulation, including selecting subsets and recoding.

  • Introduce the visual representation of variables in scatter graphs, bar charts, and histograms.

  • Examine the relationships between variables

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Read-in, enter, organise, and save data in a suitable way.

  • Calculate/recode variables and prepare data for analysis.

  • Conduct descriptive and basic inferential statistics.

  • Be familiar with SPSS presentation of statistical output.

  • Create and edit graphical displays of data.

Duration and Venue

The training goes for 1 week and classes are held for one and half hours online through ZOOM for 5 days.

The course will cover:

  • Introduction to statistical analysis

  • Examine individual variables

  • Test hypotheses about individual variables

  • Test the relationship between categorical variables

  • Test on the difference between two group means

  • Test on differences between more than two group means

  • Test the relationship between scale variables

  • Predict a scale variable: Regression
