WHY THIS PROGRAMME?

At the end of the training, we don’t ask: “Did you understand the report?”
We ask: “Which number did you ask about before you signed?”

Budget holders are accountable for money they were never taught to read. So the variance goes unquestioned, the forecast is somebody else’s guess, and the first real conversation about the figures happens with an auditor.

Read it for yourself

Three statements, a budget and a variance report, explained in language that assumes no accounting background at all.

Ask the question in the room

Know enough to challenge a figure, test an assumption and ask for the number behind the number — in the meeting, not afterwards.

THE VANTAGE DIFFERENCE

The numbers stop being somebody else’s problem.

You are not going to post journals or run a trial balance. You are going to read what finance sends you, know which figure matters, and be able to say why a number is wrong before anybody else notices.

✕WHAT WE AVOID

  • Accounting taught to people who will never do accounting
  • Budget reviews where nobody asks a question
  • Controls described as rules rather than as risks

✓WHAT WE DO

  • A budget you built from your own workplan
  • Variances you can explain before you are asked
  • Controls you understand well enough to insist on
THE 12-TOPIC JOURNEY

12 practical topics. No figure you cannot question.

The pathway is designed around what you will be able to do. You begin guided virtual learning as soon as you register, then build on it during three practical days in Nairobi, 24–26 May 2027.

5 Topics

VIRTUAL · START IMMEDIATELY

The statements, the vocabulary, and how a budget is built and read.

7 Topics

PHYSICAL · 24–26 MAY 2027

Three focused days on cash, variance, controls, fraud and audit, in Nairobi.

01 Register & start learning 02 5 virtual topics 03 7 physical topics · 24–26 May 04 Build & defend your plan

Proposed allocation: topics 1–5 are guided online and cover reading the numbers; topics 6–12 are worked through during the three physical days, on your own budget, with a facilitator beside you.

YOUR PRACTICAL OUTCOMES

By the end of the training, this is what you will be able to do.

Explore each topic below. The real test is the next finance meeting you sit in.

A CERTIFICATE HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING

How do we know you can read what finance sends you?

Understanding a budget in a classroom is not the same as defending one. What gets checked here is whether you can build a budget from a workplan, explain a variance without being led to it, and name the control that should have caught a problem.

Join the 12-topic pathway →
1
Bring your own budget

The real one you are accountable for, with its real problems.

2
Rebuild it from the workplan

Costs that follow the activities, with the assumptions written beside them.

3
Read the variance

Explain each one, and say which is a timing problem and which is real.

4
Forecast the outturn

From part-year actuals, with the reasoning you would give a board.

5
Find the control that failed

In a worked case, and say what should have caught it.

WHAT YOU LEAVE WITH

Financial reports you can read, question and act on.

The reference material comes with the programme. The thing worth carrying home is your own budget rebuilt properly — costed from the workplan, phased across the year, with the variances explained and a forecast you could put in front of a board.

A budget built from your own workplan, with assumptions
A phased cash flow forecast
A variance analysis with written explanations
A year-end outturn forecast from part-year actuals
A management report for non-financial readers
An internal control checklist for your own area
A fraud red-flag guide for managers
Your own budget rebuilt and defended — during training

WHO THIS IS FOR
✦ NO ACCOUNTING BACKGROUND NEEDED

You signed the budget. Nobody taught you to read it.

Most managers inherit a budget somewhere around their second promotion, and are expected to understand it immediately. Nothing in their training ever covered it, so they rely on finance, agree with the report, and hope the questions stay general. This programme is built for exactly that position — and you leave it as the one asking the questions.

No prior finance needed

Plain language, your own numbers.

No debits and credits, no journals, no accounting qualification. Everything is taught through the documents you already receive and the decisions you already have to make.

Bring your own budget and your last variance report.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything clear before you decide.

What makes this different from other finance courses?

It is written for managers rather than for accountants. You work on your own budget throughout, and nothing is taught in accounting language when plain language will do.

Do I have to work through all 12 topics?

Yes. The pathway covers all 12 topics, 5 guided online and 7 in the room, subject to the programme’s formal assessment decisions.

How are the online and physical topics taught?

The first 5 are introduced through guided online work before the workshop and cover reading the numbers. The remaining 7 form the focus of the three physical days in Nairobi, spent on cash, variance, controls, fraud and audit.

Does the $80 count toward the total fee?

Yes. Under the standard-fee pathway, the $80 initial payment counts toward $580 and leaves $500 payable. The $480 offer is for early full payment, not the instalment plan.

When and where exactly is the physical training?

The programme is planned for Nairobi, Kenya on 24–26 May 2027. The exact venue will be confirmed by the Vantage Africa team before a final booking commitment.

I am genuinely bad with numbers. Will I cope?

Yes. The programme assumes no accounting background and starts from the documents you already receive. Everybody in the room is there for the same reason.

Will this help with donor budgets specifically?

Yes. Restricted funds, phasing, burn rate and reporting against a donor budget are covered, and most participants bring exactly that kind of budget to work on.

Can my organisation sponsor me or request a group course?

Yes. Contact Vantage Africa for an invitation letter, invoice or a tailored in-house proposal.
