WHY THIS PROGRAMME?

At the end of the training, we don’t ask: “Do you have the policies?”
We ask: “Would they have caught the problem in time?”

Almost every organisation that has failed badly had the policies. They were written, approved, filed, and never once used to stop anything.

◎

Know who decides what

Delegations, committees and board roles written clearly enough that nobody has to guess where a decision belongs.

✧

Test the control, not the policy

Whether the thing that should catch a problem actually would, which is a different question from whether it is documented.

THE VANTAGE DIFFERENCE

We build controls that work — not policies that exist.

A register nobody opens, a policy nobody has read and a committee that rubber-stamps are all worse than nothing, because they create the appearance of oversight. This programme is about the version that would have caught the thing nobody saw coming.

✕WHAT WE AVOID

  • Risk registers written once a year for the board pack
  • Policies copied from another organisation
  • Compliance treated as the finance team’s problem

✓WHAT WE DO

  • Risks with owners, dates and a review that happens
  • Controls tested rather than listed
  • A compliance calendar somebody is accountable for
THE 12-TOPIC JOURNEY

12 practical topics. Controls that work when they are tested.

The pathway is designed around what you will be able to do. You begin guided virtual learning as soon as you register, then build on it during three practical days in Nairobi, 31 May – 2 June 2027.

5 Topics

VIRTUAL · START IMMEDIATELY

Governance, board roles, accountability and the risk framework.

7 Topics

PHYSICAL · 31 MAY – 2 JUNE 2027

Three focused days on controls, compliance, ethics, safeguarding and assurance, in Nairobi.

01 Register & start learning 02 5 virtual topics 03 7 physical topics · 31 May – 2 Jun 04 Build & defend your plan

Proposed allocation: topics 1–5 are guided online and cover governance and risk; topics 6–12 are worked through during the three physical days, on your own organisation, with a facilitator beside you.

YOUR PRACTICAL OUTCOMES

By the end of the training, this is what you will be able to do.

Explore each topic below. The real test is whether any of it would have stopped the last failure.

A CERTIFICATE HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING

How do we know the controls would actually work?

Documentation is not assurance. What gets checked here is whether each significant risk has a control attached, whether that control has been tested rather than described, and whether somebody could raise a concern and have it acted on.

1
Start from your own organisation

Its real structure, its real obligations and its real exposure.

2
Find the risks nobody writes down

Beyond the operational ones, including the awkward and the reputational.

3
Attach a control to each

Preventive, detective or corrective — and name who owns it.

4
Test one properly

Not whether it exists, but whether it would have caught the thing.

5
Map the assurance

Who checks what, how often, and what reaches the board.

WHAT YOU LEAVE WITH

Oversight your board could actually rely on.

The reference material comes with the programme. The thing worth carrying home is your own organisation’s risk register, control checks, compliance calendar and assurance map — built here and argued through with peers rather than copied from somewhere else.

A delegation of authority matrix
A risk register with owners, controls and review dates
A risk appetite statement for board discussion
An internal control checklist with test steps
A compliance obligations map and calendar
A conflict of interest and gifts register
An assurance map across the three lines
Your organisation’s own GRC pack — built during training

A register, not just a certificate

Observable work, feedback and practical checks — and a risk and assurance pack your board could use at the next meeting.

WHAT IT COSTS TO GET WRONG
✦ FUNDING, REPUTATION, PEOPLE

Organisations rarely fail on strategy. They fail on governance.

A safeguarding case handled badly. A procurement nobody documented. A conflict of interest never declared. Failures like these end organisations that were doing good work — and they almost always trace back to a control that existed on paper and nowhere else.

Before it is tested

The time to fix it is now.

Every organisation finds out whether its governance works at the worst possible moment. The ones that survive did the unglamorous work beforehand.

Bring your current register and policies. Most of the work is making them real.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything clear before you decide.

What makes this different from other governance courses?

The programme is built around practical work rather than attendance. You build your own register, controls and assurance map, and test them against real failures rather than discussing principles.

Do I have to work through all 12 topics?

Yes. The pathway covers all 12 topics, 5 guided online and 7 in the room, subject to the programme’s formal assessment decisions.

How are the online and physical topics taught?

The first 5 are introduced through guided online work before the workshop and cover governance and risk. The remaining 7 form the focus of the three physical days in Nairobi, spent on controls, compliance, ethics, safeguarding and assurance.

Does the $80 count toward the total fee?

Yes. Under the standard-fee pathway, the $80 initial payment counts toward $580 and leaves $500 payable. The $480 offer is for early full payment, not the instalment plan.

When and where exactly is the physical training?

The programme is planned for Nairobi, Kenya on 31 May – 2 June 2027. The exact venue will be confirmed by the Vantage Africa team before a final booking commitment.

Is this for board members or for management?

Both, and organisations often send one of each. The board roles topic is written for trustees and directors; the control and compliance topics are written for the people who have to operate them.

Do we need an existing risk register?

No, though bring it if you have one. Several participants arrive with a register written for a board pack and leave with one their organisation can actually use.

Can my organisation sponsor me or request a group course?

Yes. Contact Vantage Africa for an invitation letter, invoice or a tailored in-house proposal.
