The BOMA Project is a U.S. nonprofit organization and Kenyan NGO that works to provide poor women living in the arid and semi-arid lands of Northern Kenya with the educational, financial, and technological resources to lift themselves out of poverty. Their Business Mentorship Program helps women start and sustain businesses through the use of business mentors.

Program Offered

When the organization noticed there was a high business failure rate and stagnation, they invited Vantage Africa consultants to help. Our team did an analysis of the environment that these businesses were operating, and developed a training program for the mentors in charge of these businesses.

Outcome

These mentors were equipped with skills to not only help the businesses survive but also inspire growth and expansion. Since then, survival rate and growth levels for these women-led businesses have been on a steady rise.

Research shows that more than 70% of new SMEs started in Kenya do not survive past their first year of operation. One of the key reasons behind this trend is lack of professional advice and support.
